Red Labrador Retriever Adult - Adoption, Rescue for sale in Santa Fe, Texas

Hi! My name is Red, and I'm looking for my furever family. I've been with my foster family for a while now because my leg was hurting me and making me anxious but now that it's gone I feel much better! I moved in with my foster family after hurricane Harvey because my first family couldn't take care of me any more. It took me a while to settle in and get used to new people and for the nice Veterinarian to figure out what was wrong with my leg. Turns out I had a nasty fungus that messed up the bone in my leg which is why my foster mom decided I would be happier as a tripod, and she was totally right. I'm much happier and more active now that it's gone. My foster family also has two pitbull sisters that play with me and help me feel more confident. They show me what to do and I like to follow their lead when learning new things like how to behave during walks and how to meet new people and other dogs at the dog park. Since living with them I've also learned how to sleep in my crate (although sometimes I get to sleep on the bed), how to use the bell by the door to ask to go outside to potty, and how to sit and wait nicely for my food. That one is the hardest for me, I get so excited I bounce up and down on my one leg. My foster mom says I look like a dog on a Pogo stick! My ideal home would be with a family that is experienced with larger dogs like me and ideally with dogs that can take a while to adjust to a new home and/or have some anxiety. I'm a very friendly and happy boy with my family, but it can take me a while to warm up to a new situation and while I'm learning about my new home I can get a little defensive when I'm scared, although I will always try to just get away from what's scaring me first. I especially prefer being able to go in to my crate when I am feeling stressed or when I'm worn out from playing and need a break and some "me time" so a comfy crate for me is a must. I would also love to have a fur sibling that can help me adjust and learn about my new home. I get along best with confident, highly social female dogs but I have lived and played with other boys and dogs of all sizes as long as they are friendly and not too pushy. My foster family doesn't have kids but I have met and done well with older children. I can meet and do well with younger children but with my size, anxiety, and a bit of clumsiness from being a tripod I probably shouldn't live with children that are easily knocked down or too young to understand when I'm feeling stressed and need time to settle down. If you think I might be a good fit for your family, you can fill out an application for me at and my foster mom can set up a time for us to meet!
